MCR008 Corporate Strategy
All organisations have an objective, or set of objectives, that they seek to achieve. An organisation’s strategy is the articulation of the set of choices made by the senior leader/s of the organisation to guide the ways by which the organisation will achieve those objectives. This subject will introduce students to some of the key choices that those senior leaders have to make, give them a range of tools to perform the analysis required to inform those decisions, and require them to formulate corporate strategy recommendations based on case studies.
While this field of study is usually presented as ‘corporate’ strategy, and the vehicles for exploring the concepts and choices are usually businesses, due to the clearer application of the competition that underpins strategy that does not limit the use of these concepts to for-profit organisations. The ‘corporate’ in this sense relates to a singular strategy addressing the choices for all of an organisation’s sub-units. Each sub-unit may, in turn, have its own ‘business-level’ strategy to achieve the objectives set it by the corporate strategy. While the name is more business-oriented, a ‘corporate strategy’ is a concept equally as applicable for public and non-profit organisations.

MCR001 Economics
This subject develops an evidence-based approach to economic decision-making building on four core economic principles. Students will first learn how these core economic principles: - cost benefit, opportunity cost, thinking marginally and interdependence: can/could be applied in their own lives and then, armed with this experiential knowledge, apply these core principles to understanding how buyers and sellers interact to form markets. Students will then go on to examine how governments shape markets through intervention or non-intervention.
Students will then build on this knowledge to understand how markets taken together form the macroeconomic environment, which in turn shapes the microeconomic environment. Students will learn how governments can intervene to at the macroeconomic level to address the issues of inequality, recession, inflation and the growth of economies. The course will examine the forces that have shaped economic history and how they will continue to do so, and how economics has itself has changed over time and will continue to do, always building on the knowledge that has already been gained.
