Looking for Jobs
There are three (3) common ways to look for jobs:
Searching for advertised jobs is the most common way to find a position. Positions are now mostly advertised exclusively on the internet and the job search sites below are the most common and popular for companies and job seekers in Australia:
If you are interested in government jobs, it is also useful to search the government job websites (note Australian government positions typically require applicants to hold Australian citizenship):
Register with a Recruitment Agency
There are a number of recruitment agencies that specialise in roles for accounting and business graduates. An agency will usually review your CV, and if they are impressed with your CV, will contact you for an interview where a recruitment consultant will make as assessment of you as a potential candidate. This assessment process can be varied depending on the recruitment company, but the consultant will be looking for candidates who are:
- well presented,
- have a positive attitude
- who communicate well verbally and in writing,
- have an ambitious yet realistic plan for their career and goals,
- have considered the types of jobs they are interested in and can give convincing reasons why they are pursuing their nominated roles; and
- can evidence attributes such as teamwork, ability to work well with others, a cooperative attitude, problem solving skills, etc.
There are many recruitment agencies based in Sydney. A good way to find them is to start with the directories below listing recruitment agencies. They may not contain all agencies, but are a good reference to begin. Agencies usually specialise in a particular industry (such as accounting/finance, HR, IT, office support, engineering, education, etc), so you should read the company’s profile first to see if they specialise in employment in your field.
Search for hidden jobs
Not all jobs are advertised, and you may be able to find unadvertised jobs using the following methods:
- Company websites- Companies often advertise current positions or have careers information on their websites. You can use Internet search engines to find the companies that interest you.
- Professional associations- Many of these organisations have informative websites and/or industry contacts.
- Labour Market surveys- These are produced by government and recruitment agencies providing reports on labour market trends, salary information and skills sought by employers.
- Directories (see below)
